Warwick United Church of Christ finds itself located in the midst of a growing Non-English speaking population. As a result, Warwick UCC is now starting an Enlish-as-a-Second Language program to help the Non-English speaking community to better function in their new environment.

We are currently working with Refuge and Immigration Services and the Peninsula Reads organizations for testing and support resources.

The Refugee and Immigration Services on the Peninsula has located several Burmese, Bhutanese, and Iraqi families near our church in the Candlewood Apartments. In response to their request for possible oversite and space for computer resources, Warwick UCC now has a Language Lab to assist the refugees in their quest for English as a Second Language. Three computers running the Rosetta Stone tutorial program have been provided by the Refugee and Immigration Services, three computer desks have been donated to accomodate them, and the Lab began operation in the last week of August. Currently open from 9 to 12 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, the Lab has been utilized at every opportunity. Many of the refugees cannot come to the Lab during the above times so additional hours to accommodate those who work are being considered. In the photo one sees Hema Rimal of Bhutan and Tin Tin Mya and Eh Doh Gay refugees from Burma (Myanmar).
